[“Animal Crossing: New Leaf” digital manual on 3DS]
Become mayor or resident
of New Leaf, a sleepy town.
Interact with residents, but the
first player to create
can become mayor. Game
works with your system’s
calendar and clock. Adjust
them so that there is a chance
you might see the weeds in your town.
Or your turnips might rot or
run
walk
chat
equip a tool
go for a swim,
or shake a tree and
THUD!
Giant hive falls to your
utter horror and instead
of netting a bee for the
museum and your encyclopedia,
you’re left with a swollen
bruised face.
Two greedy raccoons
running the shabby store don’t
give a bell for your medical urgency
and don’t currently stock
any medicine. Their even greedier
raccoon-relative of a
real estate agent charges
“trifling” 500,000 bells for expansions.
“Pocket change, really.”
Tom, bells don’t grow on trees.
Not until I earn
that golden shovel
to hit boulders with that
spew actual “pocket change”
out of thin air, or
bury perfect fruit and
hope that no stupid animal
moves in and rips out a profitable
fruit-tree from your orchards.

weapons––I mean, handy tools

The prompt was to take some type of literature nearby, or anything with text, and turn it into a poem. So I based this off of the Animal Crossing: New Leaf's digital manual on the 3DS and put in some details about the gameplay as well.
Kinda bummed out that the professor loved this final revision of this poem so much that he ALMOST selected it to be read at the college's student-readings next week. ALMOST. But because I was out of town for the past 2 classes, we never got to discuss it!
But this is now one of my favorite poems I've written and one of the best ones I've written in a long long time~ And poetry is way out of my comfort-zone, so having a great poem come out like this and almost get selected to be read to the school would've been very exciting for me...
